The New York Times has an incredible issue out with all kinds of neat articles on design, marketing and product development for a kid audience. The overall tone of the articles is kind of cautionary though -- definitely worth a read. IDFuel has a reaction to a couple of the stories with a little toy designer's perspective thrown in.

Dongtan is the first city designed from scratch for total environmental efficiency.
Dongtan sits at the eastern tip of Chongming Island, 470 square miles of mostly undeveloped land at the mouth of the Yangtze River. A bridge-and-tunnel system and subway extension will connect the island to Shanghai around 2010. By 2020, Dongtan will begin to grow north along a public transit corridor, but more than half of the site will still remain park and farmland.

An interesting documentary that goes into the life of factory workers in
extreme
detail, the reactions of the government to conditions and environment, and also
the reactions of the workers.

Chinese villages...

According to my research I understand that  in the rapid pace at which china is growing..... many traditional elements like a traditional chinese village is fast dissapearing  in this rapidly growing  urban chaos / sense ( whichever way one looks at it)...
So i was wondering that when we are talking about these villagers coming from these villages to work in these new factory / industrial towns...what exactly are we talking about...?? traditions exist in the ppl..they carry it forward no doubt... but arent these workers also loosing touch with their cultures and ways of living even when they are  in the villages (before they reach the age of leaving the so called villages to work in industrial areas...???)
So what kind of memories are they carrying with them when they leave their villages and what kind of situations do they visit for that 10 days of their vacation time...???
