China's Great Green Leap Forward
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.05/feat_popup_sb.html
CROPS Hollowed-out hills around Dongtan have been built to limit flooding and house underground organic "plant factories." | UTILITIES A power facility burns rice husks to make electricity and sends waste heat to homes and businesses. Nearly all trash is recycled. | FLOOD CONTROL A network of canals and ponds, modeled on ancient Chinese methods, protects the city from storm surges. | CARBON BAN Delivery trucks from elsewhere in China must park at the city limits and load goods onto shared zero-emission vehicles. | BUILDINGS Businesses and residences are four to eight stories high, tall enough to minimize sprawl, but not so tall that they sink in soft soil. | OPEN SPACE Sixty-five percent of the area is farms and parks. |
WIND ENERGY A large wind farm generates green electricity. |

Chinese villages...
According to my research I understand that in the rapid pace at which china is growing..... many traditional elements like a traditional chinese village is fast dissapearing in this rapidly growing urban chaos / sense ( whichever way one looks at it)... So i was wondering that when we are talking about these villagers coming from these villages to work in these new factory / industrial towns...what exactly are we talking about...?? traditions exist in the ppl..they carry it forward no doubt... but arent these workers also loosing touch with their cultures and ways of living even when they are in the villages (before they reach the age of leaving the so called villages to work in industrial areas...???) So what kind of memories are they carrying with them when they leave their villages and what kind of situations do they visit for that 10 days of their vacation time...??? |
